The first two years of the Russia-Ukraine war are estimated to have produced 175 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e). These emissions were caused by a variety of different sectors, as well as regions. The majority of emissions produced between February 24, 2022, and February 23, 2024, came from warfare activities. 55 percent of these warfare emissions originated in occupied territories in Ukraine, while 20 percent were from territories controlled by the Ukrainian government. Meanwhile, emissions from landscape fires were evenly distributed between the same two geographical regions of Ukraine. In comparison, aviation emissions linked to the war were mostly from the rest of the world, primarily as a result of re-routing flights due to the closure of Russian airspace for Western airlines.
