As of 2022, there were 17,544 publicly owned treatment works (POTWs) operating in the U.S. During that period, only 37.5 percent of them had advanced treatment processes in their plants. Advanced treatment aims to reduce or eliminate impurities below what is attainable through more conventional secondary treatment, for example, ozone treatment, membrane bioreactors, and ultraviolet processes.
