Around 1,000 hectoliters of ice wine were tested in the Rhenisch Hesse region in 2023. This was significantly less than in 2022 when around 3,0000 hectoliters were produced. These tests are official procedures conducted to determine whether the wine can be sold as a "quality" wine. Ice wine is made from grapes that were frozen while still on the vine, making them naturally sweet and eliminating the need for adding sugar.
