Voter turnout in Indian general elections 2009-2019, by urbanity
In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, voter turnout was highest in rural areas at 69 percent, followed by towns at 65 percent and cities at 60 percent. Meanwhile, voter turnout in towns decreased, while voter turnout in cities increased during the recorded period.
Rural India typically has higher vote shares due to the significant role of political power in addressing community needs. Additionally, rural voters tend to make collective voting decisions as opposed to the more individualistic approach of urban voters.
