Largest Chinese investment in renewable energy in Australia 2015-2023, by investor
In 2023, the biggest Chinese investor in the Australian renewable energy sector was the company Beijing Energy International Holding with an investment of 197 million Australian dollars. The highest amount invested by a Chinese company in the sector was in 2015 by the company State Power Investment Corporation.
Renewable energy is becoming more attractive to Chinese foreign investment
Much of the world is slowly moving towards more viable renewable energy sources, which is making this sector more attractive to potential investors. The share of Chinese investment in the renewable energy industry in Australia reached 21 percent of the total amount of investments in 2023. The value of these investments in the renewable energy industry has varied, from a high of just over three billion Australian dollars in 2015, to only 197 million Australian dollars in 2023.
Australia’s mining industry remains popular for investment
The need for raw materials and traditional forms of energy such as oil and gas remain an ongoing concern across the globe, as such, many companies continue to invest heavily into the mining and energy industry. When looking at Chinese investment across various industries in Australia, mining and energy accounted for 51 percent of the total amount of investments between 2006 and 2013, making it the most popular investment sector by far. Some of the largest Chinese investments in the mining industry during this period include Chinacols’ acquisition of a nine percent stake in the industry giant Rio Tinto Group in 2008, for a cost of 15 billion Australian dollars.
