Approximately 2.1 billion pounds of TRI-listed chemical waste were disposed of to land on site in the United States in 2022. The metal mining sector accounted for the largest share of land disposal quantities that year, at almost 70 percent. On-site land disposal methods include landfills, underground injection wells, surface impoundments, as well as other land disposal categories like spills and leaks.
