The number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices in Japan was expected to grow from around 29.1 million in fiscal year 2023 to 35.9 million in fiscal year 2026. It was then forecast to decline again to 27.1 million by fiscal year 2030, mainly because of a shift from 3G and 4G to 5G in the cellular network market. IoT devices in this case indicated IoT devices for business-to-business (B2B) purposes. A breakdown by communication standard shows that cellular network and cellular low-power, wide-area (LPWA) constituted the largest category of the market in fiscal year 2023.

The number of devices includes the communication standards Wi-SUN, Wi-Fi HaLow, other 920MHz band low-power, wide-area (LPWA), as well as cellular network and cellular LPWA.
