According to a survey conducted in September 2023, almost 60 percent of French respondents declared they were in favor of a relative majority in the National Assembly. A relative majority implies that the government is forced to take into account the opposition forces' opinions when passing the laws. On the opposite, in a situation of absolute majority, laws are passed quickly, by the majority in power.
Are you more in favor of an absolute or relative majority in the National Assembly?
*The absolute majority in the National Assembly is set at 289 seats. If a political group, or coalition, reaches this number - and if this majority demonstrates unity and cohesion - the executive can pass the laws it proposes without difficulty.
**When no political group or coalition reaches the threshold of 289 deputies, the group or coalition with the largest number of seats has a relative majority.
