In 2022, territorial-based carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions in Israel reached over 56 million metric tons. In 2021, consumption-based CO₂ emissions reached almost 78 million metric tons. That year, consumption-based emissions amounted to almost 42 percent more than the country's territorial-based emissions, making Israel a net importer of CO₂.
Consumption-based carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions compared to territorial-based emissions in Israel from 1990 to 2022
(in metric tons)
Consumption-based values for 2022 are missing. 'Consumption-based' emissions account for CO₂ emissions generated by place of consumption of goods and services, rather than place of production. 'Consumption-based' emissions are calculated by 'production-based' emissions, minus emissions from exports, plus emissions from imports. When a territory's 'consumption-based' emissions are higher than their 'production-based' emissions, it is considered a net importer of carbon dioxide. If its 'consumption-based' emissions are lower, then it is a net exporter. This data accounts for carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions derived from fossil fuels and industrial activity, and does not account for emissions based on changes of land use, as well as emissions from international aviation and shipping.
