The Arroio dos Ratos mine, located in Rio Grande do Sul, was Brazil's largest coal mine in operation in 2023, based on production volume. That year, the mine, which is operated by Copelmi Mineracao, produced over 4.2 million metric tons of coal. Brazil's second-largest coal mine that year was Recreio Mine, which is also located in Rio Grande do Sul. It had a production volume of some 2.2 million metric tons.
