The Micare Mine, located in the state of Coahuila, was Mexico's largest coal mine in operation in 2023, based on production volume. That year, the mine, operated by Altos Hornos de Mexico Sde CV, produced over six million metric tons of coal. Mexico's second-largest coal mine in 2023 was Mimosa Unit Project, also located in Coahuila and operated by Altos Hornos de Mexico, with a production of roughly 2.6 million metric tons of coal.
