In 2021, 6.6 percent of women living alone in the U.S. reported feelings of depression, this was higher than 4.9 percent of women who were living with others. In general, both men and women in the U.S. who lived alone were more likely to report feelings of depression than those who lived with others.
Share of adults who experienced feelings of depression in the United States in 2021, by gender and living arrangement
Note: For the analysis original questions asked: “How often do you feel depressed? Would you say daily, weekly, monthly, a few times a year, or never?” and “Thinking about the last time you felt depressed, how depressed did you feel? Would you
say a little, a lot, or somewhere in between a little and a lot?”
For the results an adult was considered having feelings of depression if they report “daily” feelings of depression “a lot” of the time, “daily” feelings of depression “somewhere in between a little and a lot of the time,” or “weekly” feelings of depression “a lot” of the time.
The number of adults and children under 18 living in the home determined the living arrangements. If an adult lived alone and there were no children under the age of 18, that person was considered to be living alone.
