Time spent online with the open internet vs. walled gardens in the U.S. 2014-2023
In 2014, walled gardens accounted for 62 percent of time adults spent online in the United States. In 2023, the share decreased to 39 percent. Walled gardens are closed ecosystems where the publisher controls all advertising processes, safeguards user data, and does not share information with outside parties. Examples include Facebook and Amazon, which require log-ins and can track users across devices.
