Relative to the total forces deployed in Normandy on D-Day, the German casualty rate was much higher than that of the Allies. Although both sides suffered roughly the same number of casualties in absolute terms, at around 10,000 casualties each, the Allies' numerical advantage meant their casualties represented a much smaller share of their attacking force. This was even true at Omaha beach, the deadliest beach on the day, where almost 3,700 casualties represented just 11 percent of the landing force. Due to disorganization and rapidly changing defensive lines, German figures are less clear on the day, however it is believed that more than one in six German defenders on the beaches of D-Day was a casualty by the evening of June 6.
