During April and December 2023, 2.31 billion person-days were generated across India under the Mahatma Gandhi National Employment Guarantee Act. The demand for rural manual jobs spiked during the Covid pandemic when migrant workers returned to their home villages and the government initiative became their source of employment. The scheme provides 100 days of compulsory employment to rural households.
