Around 5.8 million people in Germany received benefits under SGB II (German Social Code) in March 2023, of which around 2.94 million were female. Recipients of benefits under SGB II include those eligible for benefits who are capable of work and those who are incapable of work.

Persons in benefit communities under SGB II include those entitled to benefits who are capable of work, those who are incapable of work, other beneficiaries (e.g. persons who only receive social insurance contributions) and persons who are not entitled to benefits (e.g. old-age pensioners, children without individual entitlement to benefits).
