In 2023, over 85 percent of cost of alkaline hydrogen production in China was electricity. Alkaline and PEM electrolysis are two methods to produce green hydrogen. While alkaline production has higher electricity costs, PEM electrolysis has a higher share of equipment depreciation costs.
Breakdown of alkaline electrolysis production costs of green hydrogen in China in 2023
Hydrogen production via alkaline electrolysis is calculated against a production size of 1,000 Nm3/h, with an electrolyzer cost of CNY 2,500/kW; Hydrogen production via PEM electrolysis is calculated against a production size of 200 Nm3/h, with an electrolyzer cost of CNY 14,000/kW.
