The long-term unemployed accounted for an average of around 34.7 percent of all unemployed people in Germany in 2024. An average of around 2.78 million people were registered as unemployed in 2024, of which of around 961,300 were long-term unemployed.

* The figure for 2024 is the average value for the months January to May.

Long-term unemployed means that the person concerned has been unemployed for at least one year.

The figures up to 1997 represent September values, while figures from 1998 onwards represent annual averages. The data for 2005 and 2006 was extrapolated based on non-revised results, and from 2007 onwards, the data was based on the integrated unemployment statistics, incorporating data from authorized municipal agencies. Since 2008, an automated estimation procedure has been used in the event of data failures from the municipal agencies. Under-reporting in 2005 and 2006, and to a lesser extent in 2007, was compensated with simple estimates to ensure time series comparisons are possible. The statistic shows the proportion of long-term unemployed in relation to all unemployed, including information on the duration of unemployment.
