The buildings' sector of the current members of the EU decreased its contribution to the overall emissions in previous decades, from 22.2 percent in 1979 to 17.2 percent in 2000. The 2,805 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emitted by buildings in 2022 amounted to 17 percent of the overall emissions of the EU.
