Around 45 percent of all surface water bodies in England had a good chemical status in 2019, a decrease of 13 percentage points compared to 2009. The English surface water bodies with the highest ecological status that year were coastal waters, of which 45 percent showed only a slight or no change from their natural state as a result of human impact.
