In 2023, flights departing from airports in the United Kingdom emitted approximately 32 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂). Around 70 percent of this total came from long haul flights (extra-UK and non-European), while flights heading for European destinations produced just over nine MtCO₂ that year. Although emissions from flights departing the UK increased by some 23 percent in 2023, they remained slightly below 2019 levels.
