Google has produced by far the largest amount of foundation models in the period from 2019 to 2023, a total of 40 over the period. Google does have a policy of not overinvesting in programs that do not work, and so does slash many programs if they do not appear feasible within a year. OpenAI and Microsoft together, as the two organizations have become quite heavily intertwined, produced around 38 together in the same period, nearly matching Google.

The survey was administered to census-targeted samples of over 1,000 people in each of 21 countries, for a total of 23,882 surveys conducted in 12 languages.
