In 2019, acute care services were the largest clinical source of carbon dioxide emissions by the NHS in England, releasing around 13 thousand kilotons of CO2 equivalent. Following acute care, the largest amount of CO2 emissions were attributed to primary care and non-clinical support activities by the NHS.
