News sites blocking OpenAI crawlers worldwide 2023, by country

By the end of 2023, 79 percent of the top most used news websites in the United States were blocking OpenAI's crawlers. The figure was much lower in Spain, Mexico, and Poland. Whilst these figures could change over time, the source noted that the higher percentages in some countries can be partly attributed by the speed at which publishers acted, with an uptick in blocking OpenAI's crawlers soon after launch most evident in the U.S. and Germany. Poland on the other hand waited longer before doing so, and as such, by the end of 2023, the share of top news sites (print, broadcast, and digital-born) in the country which were blocking Open AI from crawling their content was at just 20 percent.
