In 2022, worldwide hydrogen production using electrolysis amounted to 0.1 million metric tons, compared with 0.6 million metric tons generated using fossil fuels using CCUS (carbon capture, utilization, and storage). By 2030, low-hydrogen production could climb to 1.7 million metric tons when taking into account all new projects announced by September 2023 and already in the FID stage. The NZE scenario would need low-carbon hydrogen production to reach 69.5 million metric tons by 2050.
Low-carbon hydrogen production volume worldwide in 2022, with a forecast for 2030 based on announced projects as of September 2023, by investment stage and production pathway
(in million metric tons)
FID stands for "Final investment decision"; NZE scenario refers to "Net zero emissions by 2050"; The source assumes "Feasibility stage" to mean all projects, which are in the midst of a feasibility study, while "Early stage" refers to all projects which have not yet had a feasibility study commissioned.
