Europe and Central Asia was the region with the highest Human Development Index (HDI) worldwide at 0.8. Meanwhile, the lowest HDI was found in Sub-Saharan Africa, underlining the high prevalence of poverty in the region. The difference between the regions was even stronger after adjusting for inequality.
Human Development Index (HDI) worldwide in 2022, by region
The Human Development Index (HDI) is a statistic ranking countries around the world by level of human development. It is expressed as a value between 0 and 1. Since 1990, the HDI has been published in the annual Human Development Report of the UNDP. Highly developed countries have a HDI value of at least 0.8. The HDI is based on a large number of indicators, including, life expectancy at birth, literacy rate, education levels and gross national income (GNI) per capita.
The inequality-adjusted Human Development Index (IHDI) takes a country's longevity, income, and education levels into account. Please read more on page 271 in the 2023/24 Human Development Report.
