Road transportation in the European Union emitted approximately 756 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂) in 2022, making it the biggest CO₂ polluter that year. Public electricity and heat production followed closely, with emissions totaling 730 MtCO₂. Combined, these two sectors accounted for more than 50 percent of total net CO₂ emissions that year.
