Between 2017 and 2021, the number of free-floating shared bikes available in Italy never exceeded 25,000. Operators substantially increased the number of free-floating bikes on Italian streets in 2022, making nearly 39,400 bikes available.
In free-floating bike-sharing schemes, bicycles do not need to be returned to the same location where they were picked up but can be dropped off anywhere within a usually pre-determined geographic area.
