Station-based shared bike trips in Italy peaked in 2017, at nearly 7.6 million trips. By the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, trips had fallen to around 2.8 million trips but rose to 4.2 million trips in 2022.
In station-based bike-sharing schemes, hired bikes have to be returned to the station from which they were picked up or dropped off at another designated hire station.
