In a survey conducted in 2022, East Africa led in terms of instant bank payment systems in Africa, with three systems. Moreover, in the same year, West and Southern Africa each had two instant payment systems supporting bank transfers. According to the survey, 26 instant payment systems were counted in the continent.

The source defines Instant Payment Systems (IPS) as that which allow digital push payments through set procedures, making final funds available to the payee in the nearest real time.
The listed regions comprise the following countries:
East Africa: Burundi, the Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rwanda, the Seychelles, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Southern Africa: Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
ECOWAS (West Africa): Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, the Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.
North Africa: Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia.
Central Africa: Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo Republic, the Democratic Republic.
