In 2022, Germany produced a total of nearly 131 million metric tons of lignite, making it the third-largest lignite producing nation worldwide. Germany's lignite production has decreased over the past decade, as production amounted to over 178 million metric tons in 2014.
Lignite, also known as brown coal, is a sedimentary rock formed by naturally compressed peat. With a carbon content of 25 to 35 percent, it is the lowest rank of coal due to its low heat content compared to other forms such as hard coal/anthracite.
