The Metropolitan Area of Lisbon, in Portugal, has been a booming region for tourism. In 2023, tourism profit in the region was over 1.9 billion euros. Hotels were responsible for generating 1.7 billion euros in profit, while more than 213 million euros were obtained from local lodgings. The remaining 9.2 million euros were housing and rural tourism (TER and TH) profits.
Lisbon receives the most guests in Portugal and nationals dominate
The capital city of Portugal and its metropolitan area were, in 2023, the most visited region by international tourists in Portugal. The total number of guests in the region of Lisbon, both national and international, surpassed 8.8 million, the majority of which stayed at hotel accommodations. The Portuguese composed the greatest part of Lisbon’s touristic guests, having recorded more than 2.3 million visitors. Guests originating from the United States totaled over one million in 2023, while Spain was the country of origin of around 633,400 guests.
Overnight visitors in Lisbon prefer hotel establishments
The number of overnight stays in the metropolitan area of Lisbon was almost 20.3 million in 2023. Of these, only 75,500 overnight stays occurred in rural and housing tourism establishments, which demonstrates that this is a niche market in the region. Still, this type of overnight stay still generated 7.3 million euros in profit. Nevertheless, the dominance of hotels in regard to profit from overnight stays is clear, as this type of establishment was accountable for over 1.3 billion euros in profit during the same period.
