Number of NFSA beneficiaries India 2023, by states
As of June 2023, the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh is estimated to have almost 150 million people covered under the National Food Security Act. It was followed by Bihar, Maharashtra and West Bengal which also had a high share of population covered under the Act. NFSA guarantees subsidized or free food grains to poorer households and covers over 800 million people across the country.
