Cumulative forest-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Indonesia between 2001 and 2022 amounted to 21.2 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO₂e). During this same period, forests in Indonesia absorbed 13.7 GtCO₂e. This represents a net carbon source of 7.53 GtCO₂e. The dominant driver of forest-related GHG emissions in Indonesia is commodity driven deforestation. Indonesia recorded one of the largest areas of primary tropical forest loss worldwide in 2022.
