This was followed by Eritrea and Sudan, with a respective water security level of 29 and 30 points. Altogether, 13 of the 23 countries with critically insecure water conditions were located in the Middle East and Africa. Most of the world's population lives under water-insecure conditions.
Least water-secure countries worldwide as of 2023, based on water security score
According to the source, water security is scored in ten components, ranging from water quality and sanitation to availability, resource stability, and climate-related risks.
Each component is given a score out of 10, with a nation's overall water security score calculated from the sum. Countries with a score of 40 or below are considered critically insecure.
