Burnout among nurses during COVID-19 in Canada in 2021

According to a survey conducted in 2021, during the third wave in Canada, nearly three-quarters of Canadian nurses were burned out based on the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI). This means their scores of exhaustion and disengagement were both above the suggested clinical cut-offs. Another 8.6 percent of responding nurses were clinically exhausted, while 4.6 percent were clinically disengaged.

The Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI) consists of 16 items that assess the severity of burnout with two subscales: exhaustion and disengagement. Statements such as "During my work, I often feel emotionally drained" are rated by level of agreement (1-4) with 1 being "strongly agree" and 4 being "strongly disagree".
