Greenhouse gas emissions from passenger cars in the United States in 2022 were roughly 43 percent below what they were in 1990, and 35 percent below 2005 levels. By comparison, emissions from light-duty trucks (LDTs) in 2022 were more than double what they were in 1990. Combined, these two vehicle types accounted for more than 56 percent of U.S. transportation GHG emissions in 2022.
