The production value of selenite dropped to an estimated low of 440,000 Indian rupees in the financial year 2023, down from roughly one million Indian rupees in the previous year. This represented a decrease of more than 90 percent in comparison to 2019. The country's production volume of selenite has also fallen accordingly.
Selenite – together with satin spar, desert rose, and gypsum flower – is a crystal variery of the mineral gypsum. Despite its name, it contains no significant amount of the element selenium.
