According to a survey in 2024, roughly one in four nurses in Canada were considering leaving their current job. A further one in ten wanted to leave the nursing profession as a whole. This can be explained when considering that job dissatisfaction is extremely high among nurses in Canada.
Percentage of nurses in Canada who were considering leaving their job, the nursing profession, or retiring in 2024
Nurses from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland were randomly selected to participate in this research by direct e-mail invitation.
Nurses from Quebec and the Territories were encouraged to participate in this research by their local organizations and via CFNU social media posts.
The survey consisted of 107 questions, and the average time to complete the survey was 16 minutes.
