A study carried out in 2018 revealed that police officers in Eastern and Southern Africa were the most likely to engage in corruption related to illegal wildlife trade, with a share of 32 percent. Administrative government officials and military members followed, with a portion of 19 percent and 17 percent, respectively.
The illegal wildlife trade has become a major issue in countries where endemic corruption coincides with various political, economic, and social challenges.
