An estimated 48.5 percent of nitrogen dioxide (NO₂)-related premature deaths in European cities were attributable to transportation in 2015. Industry was the second-largest contributor to NO₂-related mortality that year, with 15 percent. Meanwhile, the biggest contributors to premature deaths attributable to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) were residential sources and the agriculture sector.
