China saw the annual largest growth in emissions from natural gas combustion in 2023, with an increase of 52 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂). In contrast, natural gas combustion emissions in the European Union decreased by roughly the same amount that year.
Overall, global emissions from natural gas combustion increased by 15 MtCO₂ in 2023. By comparison, global coal emissions increased by more than 270 MtCO₂ that year.
