According to an October 2024 study, the median economic value added by volunteers to non-national museums in England exceeded 45,000 British pounds in the 2023/2024 fiscal year. When focusing on large and largest institutions, namely those museums with over 50,000 visitors a year, the median volunteer value amounted to over 58,000 British pounds.

The source calculated the volunteer value by multiplying the number of volunteers hours contributed and the median hourly pay of local authorities from data by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The source defined the museum categories based on the following visitor size bands, based on pre-pandemic visitor numbers: micro museums (less than 10,000 visitors), small/medium museums (10,000 to 50,000 visitors), large/largest museums (more than 50,000 visitors).
