As of April 2024, countries located in South America are the Latin American nations most affected by dengue. From January to April 2024, Paraguay, Brazil, Argentina, and Peru showed the highest incidence rates of dengue cases, ranging from 460 to over 3,000 cases per 100,000 population. The seasonal nature of the disease leads to peak seasons taking place at different times of the year depending on the country’s location and regional characteristics.
Latin America’s latest dengue outbreak
Dengue is also a cyclical disease, which means important outbreaks happen every certain number of years. The most recent flare-up of cases in Latin America started in 2023 and has become a significant public health concern, attributed to factors such as the phenomenon of El Niño and climate change. Countries like Paraguay and Brazil have seen the number of dengue cases recorded at the beginning of 2024 surpass those of complete previous years, while figures keep on rising.
Dengue in Brazil
Brazil is the country with the highest number of dengue cases and the second-highest dengue incidence rate in Latin America and the Caribbean. The nation accounts for eight in ten dengue infections and for 75 percent of deaths reported within the region. With the latest regional outbreak, the Brazilian government has implemented a variety of measures aimed at mitigating the spread of the virus, implementing a vaccination campaign targeting the most vulnerable groups in February 2024.
