In a survey conducted in March 2023 among Australian consumers regarding their dining out habits, around 33 percent of those surveyed identified themselves as special occasion diners, tending to largely only eat out on special occasions and spending time researching venues and menus to find the perfect spot. The next most prevalent diner types that respondents identified as were the spontaneous diner and the loyal diner. Spontaneous diners refer to people who dine out frequently but rarely book in advance, often rather seeing where their senses guide them that day. Loyal diners tend to have their go-to venues and rarely try out new spots.

- Special occasion diner - mainly dines out on special occasions and spends time researching venues and menus to find the perfect spot.
- Spontaneous diner - dines out frequently but rarely books in advance. Often a walk-in at restaurants that suit their current mood.
- Loyal diner - has a small handful of go-to venues that they are loyal to, rarely tries new places, and tends to always book ahead.
- Homebody diner - tends to not dine out often but rather order takeout online and enjoy meals at home.
- Influencer diner - dines out frequently and tries out several different venues to check out the most exciting new spots. Usually, they book ahead to avoid the disappointment of not being able to try out the new spot.
