In 2021, nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions the agricultural sector in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to around 17.28 kilotons. This represents an increase of about four percent compared to the previous year.
Nitrous oxide emissions typically come from livestock farming and animal products like animal manure, cattle droppings, and fertilizers. However, biofuels and fossil fuels also contribute to N2O emissions. This type of gas causes great damage to the ozone layer, as its ozone depleting potential is high. Additionally, it has a high global warming potential (GWP) that, in the long term, can cause more damage than carbon dioxide.
In 2021, methane emissions reached almost 14 kilotons and carbon dioxide emissions amounted to over 71 thousand kilotons.

From the source: Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from direct on-farm energy use consist of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N20) gases related with fuel combustion and electricity generation in agriculture (including fisheries).
