Between 2016 to 2019, Volkswagen Truck and Bus reported a period of steady growth in vehicle orders climbing from about 20.4 thousand in 2016 up to approximately 41.1 thousand in 2019. Through 2020, Volkswagen Truck and Bus's orders decreased to 38.8 thousand orders. In 2021, orders increased to 57.2 thousand units, before slightly declining to 57 thousand units in 2022, and then to 33.7 thousand in 2023.
The brief period of decline in vehicle sales in through 2020 was in the midst of both the COVID-19 pandemic and global semiconductor shortages. It was not only VW Truck and Bus that suffered such losses as the number of cars sold worldwide suffered a decline during that same period.
