The platinum group metal (PGM) that was most used to manufacture catalytic convertors worldwide in 2021 was palladium, with demand amounting to nearly 260 metric tons. In comparison, platinum demand for catalytic converters amounted to 73 metric tons worldwide that year, while rhodium demand amounted to 29 metric tons.
Catalytic convertors are installed in automobiles to convert harmful gases from exhaust systems into more benign gases, such as steam.
