In a survey conducted between 2022 and 2023 in Australia, nearly 89 percent of high school students said they had used painkillers at least once in their lifetime. This is a trend that has decreased steadily since 1996, where around 98 percent responded that they have used painkillers at least once in their lifetime.

The smaller number of schools and students used in the 2022/2023 survey reduces the precision of prevalence estimates.

Additional time lag between the COVID-delayed 2022/2023 survey and the previous ASSAD survey in 2017 (five years instead of three).
