Urban highways were in a worse condition than rural highways in the United States in 2022. That year, 4.6 percent of all urban interstates were in poor condition as measured by the international roughness index. Meanwhile, 2.6 percent of rural interstates were in poor condition.

Figures calculated by dividing the number of miles with an international roughness index (IRI) value of over 170 inches per mile as a share of the total reported highway miles. The Federal Highway Administration defines roads with an IRI index value of over 170 as being in poor condition.
